Santo Domingo Yanhuitlan
This is one of the earliest Christian congregations and churches built in the highlands of Oaxaca and Mixtec Mountains, from the middle of the XVI Century and predating any religious building in the Valley of Oaxaca. There are numerous original beautiful wooden altars with extraordinary oil paintings from famous artists such as Andres de Concha who came from Sevilla.
The church has authentic architectural features from this early era. Since it was built over the remains of a former Mixtec Temple, relics from that era have also been uncovered in the restorations and presently exhibited in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. The Convent is opened to visit Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
