Markets Towns in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca

Saturday: Oaxaca City (Mercado de Abastos)

The Tianguis/Market in Oaxaca City is simply awesome. It takes place west of the city and it’s locally known as the “Mercado de Abastos – Abastos Market”. This the grand market of the entire valley where produce, baskets, animals, arts & crafts and many more goods are brought in from all the surrounding villages. There entire grounds are over 8 square blocks and are the largest market to be seen. There are sections for pottery, bread, birds, baskets, fish, flowers, meat and also colorful stands everywhere fruits and other goods.

The only concern/warning is that there have been pick-pockets that have been caught there, so our recommendation is to leave all valuables in the hotels safety deposit box and simply take things that can be easily handled.
