The heartland of Mayan Mexico lies in Chiapas, Mexico’s southern-most state. With a dramatic landscape that varies from rugged mountains to dense jungle, it is considered one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world. Its colonial architecture and vibrant indigenous culture stand as testament to the fascinating and sometimes turbulent history of the region. Hidden in the jungle and on twisting mountain roads one finds monumental stone pyramids and temples, the majestic ruins of ancient Mayan cities - Palenque, Toniná, Bonampak and Yaxchilán. The villages of the region are still peopled with the descendants of the Maya who speak near-extinct languages like Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Chol, Tzental, Tojolabal, Maya & Lacandon and are distinguished by their own unique style of dress, customs and handicrafts.
