Home of the famous Tehuanas, this is one of the most picturesque and extraordinary towns in the Isthmus of Oaxaca due to its world famous matriarchal social rules that have been in practice for many generations. Also famous for trade with galleons from China that landed in the XVI century, today the Tehuanas wear Oaxaca's most famous velvet blouses (huipils), made on traditional flat looms, with beautiful flower and geometric designs. Famous movie stars and artists like Dolores del Rio, Frida Kahlo and Madonna used those huipils not only for their beauty, but also for the strong feminine power they represent.
