Lecture: Oaxaca City, World Heritage Site
The first Spaniards arrived to Oaxaca less than half a year after the fall of the Aztecs of Tenochtitlan, in November of 1521, as this was a land of great fame for the arts. It was soon after, on April 25th 1532, that the initial settlement was elevated to the rank of City with the name Antequera. Today elegant structures from the XVI centuries onwards have now elevated Oaxaca City to the category of World Heritage by the UNESCO in 1987. This is a brief overview of the first settlers, their economic activities, the guilds they established, the architectural periods and the history of this beautiful city.
