Tlacolula Sunday Market and Capilla del Santo Cristo de Tlacolula
Tianguis Market
The Tlacolula Tianguis Market is east of the valley 30 minutes from Oaxaca City off the Pan-American Highway 190 that leads to the southern border of Guatemala. Of all the markets during the week this is possibly the most colorful and ethnic to visit. The valley is rich in archaeological remains with numerous archaeological sites and surrounding Zapotec Indian villages.
The Tianguis Market takes place between the central park and the church and colorful stands are set up with the most traditional goods from this area of the valley such as:
*
Tapetes (Zapotec rugs)
*
Manteles (tablecloths)
* Red Pottery (from San Marcos)
Like all Tianguis Markets, there is a special area nearby and easy to walk to where large animals are sold such as: Oxcarts, burros, bulls, cows, goats etc.
Capilla del Santo Cristo de Tlacolula
This is a chapel within the main church of Tlacolula, which is a large town in the Eastern valley of Oaxaca. This chapel is a great example of XVIII stucco baroque in the valley and aside from a special image of Christ that identifies with the locals, all the disciples are depicted in the form in which they were martyred. Additionally there are mirrors on the walls and ceiling and beautiful wrought iron details.
